Stylized Temple

A 2.5D side-scrolling environment — a fully 3D space, modeled and lit in Unreal Engine 5, but staged and composed for fixed-perspective, side-scrolling gameplay rather than free 3D traversal.

Overview

Stylized Temple is a solo environment art piece built as a 2.5D side-scroller: every asset is fully 3D — modeled, lit, and composed in Unreal Engine 5 — but staged for a fixed-perspective, side-scrolling camera rather than free 3D traversal. That constraint shifted the whole design problem from "where can the player go" to "what does the player see, and when" — composition and layered depth had to carry the environmental storytelling that full traversal usually handles on its own.

🎥 Designing for a Fixed 2.5D Camera

Building a fully 3D space for a side-scrolling camera meant every scene had to read clearly from one locked angle, not just look good from anywhere. I used foreground, midground, and background layers with deliberate depth staggering to create parallax and scale cues that a free-roaming 3D camera gets for free — but a fixed 2.5D perspective has to earn through composition.

💡 Composing Without Final Texture Detail

At greybox stage, there's no surface detail to lean on — mood has to come from massing, silhouette, and light alone. I treated lighting as the primary storytelling tool here, using warm and cool contrast to separate foreground readability from background atmosphere.

🧭 Framing the Player's Eye

Every approach into the temple was composed around a hero sightline — an archway, a shaft of light, a break in the canopy — so the player's attention is always being directed somewhere specific, even in a space with no explicit objective marker.

Design Approach

The temple was designed around a central focal point with radiating paths leading to discoverable areas. Lighting was used strategically to guide player attention toward points of interest, while the color palette communicated both the temple's ancient history and its reclamation by nature. Environmental props and architectural details reinforce the narrative without requiring explicit storytelling — a constraint made sharper by the fixed 2.5D camera, since every one of those cues has to read instantly from a single locked angle.
